7th character: Gumei, D&D 5e

 7th character: Gumei, D&D 5e

Seventh day, seventh character, first time I realize I can just reuse the same picture for the title instead of reuploading it each time! Oops, sorry Google, guess it's my fault if they delete Blogger to make more room for their shitty chat box to overtake every search and forces function we don't want. Anyway, the first week is officially ending and I celebrated with... the "it's not exciting, but it takes a minute" version of Gumei. I remade her, still a human, still level 1, still in theory an alchemist but this time she's an Artificer. Not an Alchemist Artificer, she would need to be level 3 for that and I just couldn't muster the enthusiasm to level her up and the feature of the Alchemist Artificer are not great. They're doing the whole "OOoooOOOo flavor is free, maybe your spells are alchemical items if you're using your alchemist's supply as a spellcasting focus" but it's still spellcasting, what do you mean my acid bomb got counterspell'd, how am I applying a health potion verbally by casting Healing Word thanks to my subclass extra spells? Not to mention, gotta pick a background that gives you a set of Artisan's Tools if you want your alchemist flavoring casting spells as crafting little alchemical doodads, the class just hands you a set of Thieves' Tools, here you go, that's your focus you get to start with!

I made the sheet with D&D Beyond this morning before work, so I could finish it up during my morning commute and so I wouldn't need to jump back and forth through several books. I picked variant human instead of standard human because obviously, for her feat I picked Chef instead of something stronger to keep some of the flavor of Pathfinder Gumei. As I predicted yesterday, the majority of the time was spent on background, with none of the option really fitting and the previously mentioned need to get given Artisan's Tools by the background. Not even for power or whatever, just so I could start with the character being able to fulfilled the most basic aspect of her concept. It's not like there's true crafting rule, there was no reason to make Alchemist's Supplies 50gp, I can't make Alchemist's Fire anymore than anyone else and I'm pretty sure all the funny Alchemical items fall off by level 3. I still also wanted the Thieves' Tools, Medium Armor and crossbow the class starts with, so I didn't check if there was a way to stretch the starting gold you can pick up instead. So, for the background, I picked Guild Artisan and was very dismay by the skills it forced on you, they just didn't fit the concept, nor did the feature to be honest. I then went back and marked the option to customize my background and... nothing, it didn't work. Thankfully, by that point I had almost completed the sheet and gave her starting gear, so I just went back and selected Custom Background. So now, she's a mixed of an Outlander and a Guild Artisan, braving the wild to collect herbs and whatever she need, not really enjoying the trapping of civilization. She's much rather keep her circle of friends to 4-5 morally dubious weirdoes than join the hustle and bustle of a big town.

Ahh, I guess I'm just grumpy. The character creation in D&D5e kinda bum me out, but this version of Gumei is still fun, I could enjoy myself goofing around the table with my friends. It's not a super high bar to clear, but I couldn't do that if I tried building her in FATAL, which I technically could as I think there is Alchemy in that horror of a system. So I guess see you tomorrow for Extra Gumei, FATAL edition...

...No. We're saying good-bye to Gumei, getting a little doggy-bag of random leftover to take home, nibbling a little on her hat and injecting ourselves with some mutagens on the way out. No, tomorrow, we're going back up there among the stars, briefly leaving Fantasy behind.
