Day 24: Baroness Iron Okomori, Savage Tokusatsu
Day 24: Baroness Iron Okomori, Savage Tokusatsu
Welcome back to the 24th day of the character creation challenge! It is cold as hell here, so I'm glad I got nothing to do outside, it's all staying indoor all weekend getting characters ready! Still, let's warm up with some hotblooded heroism, gratuitous explosions and random poses to get the blood flowing! I've been getting into Tokusatsu in 2025, catching the new Garo movie at a film festival last summer, getting the new Kamen Rider series streaming on Youtube and starting to watch the 70's original. Fun stuff all around! I've been enjoying the really weird special effect in the very earliest episode of Kamen Rider, more people dying should be represented by beads slipping out! Sadly, it doesn't seems like the game I picked today has rule for that exactly, but nobody's perfect! BPB Games' Savage Tokusatsu is a, I guess Setting for Savage Worlds, though it's more vibes, rules and suggestion for various Tokusatsu campaign in Savage Worlds than one unified setting. It includes stuff for Kaiju and Magical Girl too, there's also Mech rules for your Power Ranger type Sentai show.
I ignored all of those though, focusing more on the transforming hero aspect! We're talking evil organization turning people into evil cyborg to take over the world, opposed by a single band of good cyborg and their friends! The scale is smaller, not so much in scope but in that it's human-sized people fighting rather than giant monsters rampaging through the street, destroying a scale model of the city and fighting a giant robot! Cross-referencing between Savage Tokusatsu and Savage World, I declare that we're working with More Than Human, Transforming Recovery, Fast Healing and Wound Cap campaign rule, but I didn't define the setting farther than that for the sake of the challenge. Basically, those rule makes it more unlikely that a non-minion gets one shot in a fight, recovery is faster to keep things moving and character heal up when they transform so you're not punished for trying to fight the goons in human form at first. More Than Human makes it so Transformed Heroes and Monster are much sturdier and harder to hurt by normal humans, but not so much that they are fully immune.
I wanted to make a darker character, more tragic and edgy. My idea is a normal person who was kidnapped and turned into a combat cyborg by the evil organization, her mind shattered and remolded into a sadistic, cruel combatant. The process got interrupted before she was brainwashed into a loyal minion of evil, but too late to have any hope of reverting her back to normal. She starts out as a villain still, quickly reveals her grudge against the Evil Organization, becoming an uneasy ally of the more traditional heroes. She is ruthless and violent, but she still has a sense of honor and won't harm the innocents, though anyone trying to oppose her will be dealt with extreme prejudice. Just this little backstory suggest way more Hindrances than the max two major ones we can take and the game does say you can take more if you want, but I just note Code of Honor and Ruthless (Major), everything else is more background element that would come up naturally. Moving on, I distribute my 5 points of Attributes and my 12 skills point, I write down the free stuff Savage Tokusatsu gives to a normal Savage World Character. We get to pick an extra Combat Edge between Martial Artist and Brawler, but it doesn't say if we have to meet the requirements. It's entirely possible that we can make a character that fails to meet the requirements for either of them, though not getting at least d6 fighting in a Tokusatsu game would be a weird character choice. So I'm leaning toward not needing it, but I still picked Martial Artist rather than Brawler, so that's a moot point. I use my bonus options from my Hindrance to push Agility one extra die size and take a Edge that makes our character slower and frailer untransformed, but faster, hardier and harder to hit when transformed. Oh and I should say that I picked the Altered framework, giving us a 8" pace and needing an action to transform, we need to strike a pose and go "Henshin!"
I did not mention during the Savage Rifts® character, but it's pretty funny to me that distances are given in inch! It's of course for tabletop use, if we're using a battlemap, our character can move 8" on it with an action, but it's funny to imagine the character actually just taking a little 8" step. I also realize in this moment that I fully forgotten the Free Edge we get from being human! I was just telling myself that she needed the Berserk Edge, so I'll just add it real quick on the sheet. All that would be left now would be to buy gear, but Savage Tokusatsu actually skip that whole process. Mundane equipment aren't too relevant, so we can just be assume to have stuff that make sense for our character, but we are given for free a stock pistol, a gimmick weapon and an armor representing our transformed state. We get to pick any ancient or modern weapon aside from a few exception, for some reason we can't pick chainsaw or katana, and then we get two add two modifiers from a list. I want her weapon to be an electrified whip-sword, like Ivy's sword in Soul Calibur but electrified to make it more technological. As there doesn't seems to be damage type in Savage World, I take the Flail as the base for it's ability to ignore shield. I think it make sense for the whip sword to be able to do that. For the mods, I take Reach and Piercing, the electricity letting it bypass armor a little bit. The Armor is mentioned as being airtight and gives 2 Armor, 4 here since we're using the More Than Human campaign option and I take the powerful option, meaning her strength goes up a step when transforming, going to d8, up to d10 when Berserk.
As a finishing touch, I gave Baroness Iron Okomori enough advance to reach the next rank, raising her Agility, Fighting, Stealth and Athletics, then taking the Assassin Edge. Getting to the Seasoned rank also gives her weapon and armor one extra mod. I Made the weapon more piercing and the armor more Armored with it. All that's left is to give her a real human name, I used a name generator and her human identity is Rina Morita. She's cool, but a bit light in capabilities outside of combat. There wasn't any skill that seemed fitting for an Office Lady and we don't have a lot of spare skill points for more background elements. Still, I think I have enough to inform how to RP her.
